Sian’s Signature Styles - Bold Editorial
In this Signature Styles series I take a look a some of the photography styles that I’ve become known for and provide some insights into the types of work they are suitable for and how to get the best results if you want this style from your photo session
I love this style for fashion and beauty editorials, though it can also be great for personal portraits. It’s a fun, vibrant look that doesn’t take itself too seriously. It’s eye-catching and works brilliantly on posters and marketing materials for brands for whom colour is a big factor.
This look is characterised by bold, bright backgrounds and clothing and quite contrasty lighting with lots of definition. It’s all about colour so tying everything together with wardrobe and makeup is key to its success. I usually start with the background choice. I use paper roll backgrounds which come in a wide range of colours and can give a variety of shades depending on how much light falls on them. Take into hair colour and what’s likely to flatter your skin tone. Pops of complimentary colours work really well to lift a shot, particularly for beauty or tight headshots, or stick with monchrome for a more classic look.
