Sian’s Signature Styles - Crisp Black & White
In this Signature Styles series I take a look a some of the photography styles that I’ve become known for and provide some insights into the types of work they are suitable for and how to get the best results if you want this style from your photo session
This is a brilliant style for dramatic portraits, both in the studio and on location where the environment is darker and lights can be used to pick out details and highlights. The style works brilliantly for dancers and performers looking for that on-stage look as it’s really reminiscent of vintage Hollywood and had the high contrast that would be given by stage spotlights.
To get the most from this lighting the choice of clothing is essential, texture and variation between light and dark help create contrast in the images, so I love using it with faux furs, with lace and with strong patterns like stripes and polka dots for a striking graphical look. It works best with big poses, creating strong shapes with attitude and can be brilliant for boudoir style sessions where it conveys confidence. Evening wear also works brilliantly, for individuals and for couples and older kids often love this look as well.
