Sian’s Signature Styles - On Location Vintage Fashion Portraits

In this Signature Styles series I take a look a some of the photography styles that I’ve become known for and provide some insights into the types of work they are suitable for and how to get the best results if you want this style from your photo session

I’m a huge fan of vintage fashion and photographing vintage on location is a brilliant way to create portraits without the pressure of the studio.

Obviously there are draw backs, the UK weather for one, but the creative possibilities are endless and we are very fortunate to have a wide range of beautiful locations in Surrey, that can really enhance that vintage vibe.

Clothing is key for the vintage look and whether you choose true-vintage or reproduction looks it’s best to do your homework. I like to look at fashion magazines from the period as well as movies and posters to get a feel for the era. Colours make a massive difference and while a lot can be done in post production to get that ‘film’ look, it’s much better if you can get the colours right in person - oh and don’t forget about the accessories, nothing jars quite as much as a fitbit in your vintage style shoot.

Unless you’re an experienced vintage dresser you may find it best to get professional help with your hair and makeup for a vintage shoot as having those curls just right really improves the authenticity of the look plus it’s a great excuse for some pampering!

Perhaps more important though is thinking about the story, the character you want to play. Whether you’re a 1930s film noir sleuth, a forties landgirl or a seventies rocker - you need to channel that character and project it into your images. We always create a mood board for vintage style shoots so that I know what you’re looking for and can coach you through the ‘acting’ part of the shoot.

Plenty of planning time is needed for vintage style shoots, to get just the right locations and large scale props like cars. Permissions often need to be sought for locations and there can be additional costs for location hire. However, vintage events are a great place to source props for loan and to get inspiration and the vintage community is often really helpful if you have very specific needs for your perfect look.

I’ve been privileged to photograph for the amazing Scarlet Rage Vintage in Sussex and many of the shots featured here showcase pieces from their store and the owner’s private collection. I definitely recommend them if you’re looking for an outfit for a vintage style shoot.

Vintage style portraits on location are fun and empowering and offer a chance to get really creative. They are brilliant as gifted experience and popular with actors, dancers and models looking to expand their portfolio.
