Six things I don’t photograph, and why!
Getting the right photographer for you is really important and over the years I have come to realise that there are some things, where I am simply not that photographer. There are thousands of capable, creative photographers out there specialising in hundreds of genres and niches so don’t be tempted to try and book a photographer for something you don’t see in their portfolio - there’s a reason its not there!
So here’s my top 6 things I don’t photograph and why you’d be better off booking a different photographer for these.
Cake Smash
If you’re looking to celebrate your little one’s birthday with a messy cake play session there are lots of photographers who specialise in this. They know about getting the right cakes, are set up to make the experience clean and safe and will make sure you get the fun photos you want. I don’t have a large, permanent studio, so I’m not set up to ensure everything is spotless and clean before and after a cake smash session, so I don’t offer them!
2. Posed newborns
There are some amazing baby whisperers out there who can get you these beautiful, sleepy newborn shots with all the matching props and outfits. If you want these shots, make sure you choose someone safety qualified and experienced - there’s both an art and a science to these images and your baby’s safety comes first.
I photograph newborns in your arms or lying flat with minimal props and you close by, because it’s safe and I am not trained or experienced in the safe wrangling of precious newborns.
3. Great Big Weddings
I shoot about 4 weddings a year and specialise in small, relaxed weddings with minimal posed group shots and a more boho vibe. If you’re having a big traditional wedding and want all those wonderful, magazine worthy group shots then please pick one of the many amazing wedding specialists in Surrey - it’s your big day and you deserve someone who can deliver the images you’ve dreamt of - it’s probably not me!
4. Passport photos, school photos & high volume shots
I work best when I have time to get to know the people I photograph and I’m passionate about getting a genuine expression. Passport photos, traditional school portraits for hundreds of kids and high volume headshots just don’t allow me to do that so I don’t do them.
I’ll take a set of business headshots for your team no problem, but they won’t be generic mugshots and I will take the time to make each person comfortable and get a natural expression. I’ll take a portrait of your kid in school uniform, but they will be laughing and making a silly face - it’s just how it goes!
5. Gender Reveals
Sorry but no - gender is not the same as sex and I can’t get on board with deciding it for your child while they are still in the womb. My heart just won’t be in it and there are plenty of other photographers who will photograph this for you.
6. Sexually explicit content
I don’t shoot porn and there are plenty of others that do. It’s just not my bag, so don’t ask me, the answer is no!
